Common uses

Here are examples of a common use for identity proofing. An individual wants to open an account online with a service provider. The service provider must ensure that the party opening the account is the named individual. In each example, the user asserts his identity by offering as evidence an image of their identity document and a selfie with liveness detection. The service provider uses a different, and increasingly assured, identity proofing method to verify that the party submitting the evidence is the named individual.

Each example includes the following steps. Examples may include additional steps to illustrate a different identity proofing method.

  1. User requests to open an account online with a service provider.
  2. Service provider sends a request to the user's mobile phone to begin identity verification.
  3. User scans their identity document with a native mobile app or web browser using the camera in their mobile phone, or submits identity details.
  4. Mobile app sends the captured identity document or submitted identity details to the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform. IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform extracts personally identifiable information (PII) and the portrait from the identity document and returns confirmation of successful extraction.
  5. User scans their face using the camera in their mobile phone and performs the head movements requested by their mobile phone in case of active liveness.
  6. Mobile app sends the captured selfie stream to the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform. IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform extracts a portrait of the individual from the selfie stream.
  7. IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform verifies the portrait from the identity document to the portrait from the selfie stream, performs face liveness check, and returns confirmation of successful extraction.
  8. Mobile app confirms to the service provider successful capture of required data.
  9. Service provider requests the user's identity proof. IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform returns the identity proof file, which contains the information gathered and results of its assessments.
  10. Service provider confirms account opening to user.

Note: The IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform retains information from the interactions for 30 days after it sends the identity proof file.

Identity document with liveness against document

In this use case, the service provider uses the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform to verify a portrait from a live portrait capture (a selfie stream) to the portrait on the presented identity document.

Additional actions: The IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform performs no additional actions.

Identity document with liveness against document

Identity document with liveness against document with adjudication

In this use case, the service provider uses the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform to:

  • Verify the portrait on the presented identity document matches the portrait from a selfie stream.
  • Have a human expert operator manually review the identity document, portraits, or both for manual adjudication.

Additional actions: During step 6 (mobile phone sends the captured selfie stream), IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform sends the identity document, the extracted portraits, or both to a service representative for manual adjudication. Service representative returns the adjudication results.

Identity document with liveness against document and adjudication

Identity document with liveness against document and SoR

In this use case, the service provider uses the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform to:

  • Verify the portrait on the presented identity document to the portrait from a selfie stream.
  • Verify the information on the identity document to the information stored in the system of record at the issuing source.

Additional actions: During step 4 (mobile phone sends the captured identity document), the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform additionally:

  • Sends the personally identifiable information (PII) extracted from the identity document to the system of record (SoR).
  • Receives verification of the PII from the SoR.
Identity document with liveness against document and system of record

Identity document with liveness against portrait and SoR

In this use case, the service provider uses the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform to:

  • Verify the portrait on the presented identity document to the portrait from a selfie stream.
  • Verify the portrait on the identity document to the portrait stored in the system of record at the issuing source.

Additional actions: During step 6 (mobile phone sends the captured selfie stream), the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform additionally:

  • Sends the portrait extracted from the selfie stream to the system of record (SoR).
  • Receives verification of the portrait from the SoR.
Identity document with liveness against portrait and system of record

Identity document with liveness against portrait, SoR, and identity claim verification

In this use case, the service provider uses the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform to:

  • Verify the portrait from a selfie stream against the portrait stored in the System of Record.
  • Collect additional details of the user's identity that can be verified by an authoritative source.

Additional actions: During step 6 (mobile phone sends the captured selfie stream), the IDEMIA Identity Proofing platform additionally:

  • Sends the portrait extracted from the selfie capture video stream.
  • Receives verification result of the portrait from the SoR.
  • Asks the user to repeat step 3 to collect additional identity details and their mobile phone repeats step 4 to send additional identity details.
  • Verifies additional identity details with an authoritative source, evaluates the additional identity details with other evidence, and produces a level of assurance.
